Goals
The goal for this project was to enliven and enhance the experience of pedestrians and drivers in this beautiful waterfront neighborhood. O Wave is a circular sculpture with curves that evoke an ocean wave turning in on its self. The undulating lines of the work also echo surrounding architecture, while the glass elements simultaneously transmit and reflect light. Reflective surfaces capture the ambient activity of trees, sky and passersby enabling the fixed work to take on distinctively animated characteristics.
Process
The colors and textures used in “O Wave” are meant to symbolize Florida’s Gulf Coast, with its ocean waves and dramatic beachfront sunsets. Glass installed as overlapping fins is reminiscent of the scales of a fish.
JMC Communities, an award-winning St. Petersburg-based developer specializing in luxurious waterfront communities, built Ovation Waterfront Condominiums. “Like Ovation itself, this public sculpture will be a stunning addition to the city’s waterfront, enhancing the pedestrian experience of downtown St. Petersburg,” said Michael Cheezem, CEO of JMC Communities.
