Overview
This portrait sculpture was commissioned while the subject was still living. The Monsignor posed for me, in his chosen robes, on the future location of the sculpture, while I moved around him to take reference photos. Upon viewing early progress, Monsignor Higgins asked that I raise the forearms to indicate his gesture of welcome. Three months later, a highly detailed, portrait quality 21" clay maquette was approved by Monsignor Higgins. The 6' 4" tall clay sculpture was cast by Bronzart Foundry, Sarasota FL. The unveiling and dedication took place on October 7, 2017 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Tampa FL.
Goals
The clients hired me to create a super accurate portrait of their beloved, gravely ill, Monsignor. The life-sized bronze was the focal point of the overall design. A two tiered hexagonal black granite platform supports the sculpture. It is surrounded by a wide terracotta tile walkway to complete the site design.
Process
The contractor consulted with me regarding the placement and design of the site. He used a template provided by the foundry to locate the underpinning for the sculpture.
Additional Information
In honor of Monsignor's Irish heritage, his shroud was constructed of Irish linen.
