Overview

An eclectic lakefront home taking influence from Prairie Style, Arts and Crafts, and Mid Century details required a number of custom pieces that could negotiate the space between vintage, personal and contemporary. In the Dining Room, a cabinet features bespoke stained glass doors, reflecting the organic nature of the Arts and Crafts influence on the architecture. In the Master Bedroom, a dimensional Roi James piece straddles the bounds of handcrafted, sculptural wall hanging with a sensually pleasing and color saturated piece.

Goals

The goals of the art package was to create a complex and varied collection, while feeling integrated and effortless. IN curating a wide selection of asian prints, persian textiles, Post-Impressionist oils, as well as contemporary photography, prints, paintings, and sculpture, the home has a layered, "collected" ambiance rather than a staged presence.

Process

The Roi James piece was a tight collaboration between the interior designer, gallery and artist. The designer specified shape and asked for a color range that would remain soothing but not lethargic. We sent material samples to the artist, so he could work with the direct color palette - not only of the room, but the whole home. For the stained glass, the client had specific influences that she wanted incorporated, but the final design was a hybrid of sketches further influenced by the architecture and millwork details, as well as the actual glass pieces available, In fact, some of the components of the stained glass were greatly modified in order to incorporate the oxblood red panel found at the back of the glass shop!

Additional Information

This was an exciting client, eager to build a portfolio and willing to explore a number of media and options. We were lucky to work with the vendors, artists and artisans on all aspects of this home - from the furniture craftsmen to the meticulous handmade glass works and interior finishers, this whole home is a truly artisan-built project.
