Overview
Cesar Pelli was originally commissioned by to design a master plan for the relocation and integration of six university sites that were scattered throughout Kyushu prefecture. Together with Kisho Kurokawa, our firm redesigned the core of the campus, which consists of twenty buildings situated on 275 hectares of land. The consolidated complex is comprised of student and staff residences, faculty offices, and research facilities for 8,900 students. The facility will serve 11,300 students within three years of the project’s completion.
Goals
In developing a comprehensive layout plan, we sought to achieve a harmony between the existing terrain and the new construction. The buildings were built at different levels, and then connected by raised bridges traversing the individual structures. This innovative design allowed us to preserve the land's existing slopes without compromising accessibility to the facilities.
