Overview
“Joy Brown on Broadway” was an outdoor public art exhibition of ten of Brown’s larger-than-lifesize bronze figures in the center park mall of Broadway between 72nd Street and 166th Street for ten months in 2017-2018.
Goals
The intention of this exhibition was to bring people friendly public art to the diverse communities on Broadway. The bronze figures at nine sites up Broadway brought attention to the continuity in eight miles of parks that span the upper west side of NYC.
Process
In 2017-2018 I had the opportunity to exhibit ten of my large scale bronze figures at main intersections and parks along Broadway in NYC. This exhibition reflected the trusting collaboration over twelve years with Peter Zhao owner of Purple Roof Gallery and Atelier in Shanghai, and the collective efforts between Morrison Gallery (Kent CT), the Broadway Mall Association, NYC Parks and myself. After making and shipping the ten sculptures (value $1,000,000) and many discussions, drawings, photos and site visits, we determined the site, position and orientation of each piece for this successful exhibition, "Joy Brown on Broadway”.
