Overview

Journey Into Possibilities connects the different spaces of the Lincoln Hall Advising Center through the concept of a journey and how students move and flow through the Center both literally and metaphorically. This transformative journey that students travel as they move from adolescence to adulthood can sometimes be bumpy and fraught with uncertainties. The smooth flowing lines and fluid nature of Journey Into Possibilities is designed to have a calming and nurturing effect on the viewer that encourages and embraces new viewpoints and the endless possibilities that exist for each and every student.

Goals

With the College of Liberal Arts being both the heart and soul of the University of Illinois campus I wanted Journey Into Possibilities to portray the qualities of challenge and discovery and foster in the students a belief in themselves and the reassurance of the support that is available to them at the Lincoln Hall Advising Center. The seven art works that make up Journey Into Possibilities are installed throughout the Lincoln Hall Advising Center and reinforce the idea of the different pathways and divergent connections that are available through education and exposure to the diversity of the liberal arts. Visually enriching in its design Journey Into Possibilities highlights the energy of the multi ethnic student body through the use of universal symbols that hold a rich multiplicity of meaning in different cultures.

Process

A fundamental element of Journey Into Possibilities is its three dimensionality. The variations in depth emphasize the movement of the ripples and undulations of the organic and flowing patterns. The interplay of color and line, light and shadow all contribute to the contemplative nature of the design and reinforces the idea of a journey through a physical space and points in time. Because of weight restrictions, Journey Into Possibilities was created out of clay and cast by Orlandi Statuary in fiberglass and resin.
