Overview

Intersection*ology interrogates the way women engage and mobilize around their commonalities and differences through real time audience participation that allows individual voices to be spotlighted. We are interested in promoting a digital vision of embodied, female empowerment where we (re)negotiate our digital presence with the audience.

Goals

We are interested in promoting a vision of embodied, female empowerment that occurs in this newly evolving world space where a digital presence is overlain onto every societal interaction and transaction; it is not always developed as equal. Intersection*ology interrogates the means by which women might engage and mobilize around their commonalities and differences through real time audience participation with the performers; through movement-based light painting; and by the exchange of various forms of data with the audiences of the live performances. It is in this spirit that we will be onstage as ourselves, performing our lives rather than choreographing our parts for others to enact for us.

Process

Hepner and Ross have already enjoyed some individual success as artists in two very distinct artistic worlds. For her part, Ross has worked mostly in the commercial music and theater realm throughout her career. Intersection*ology has already begun to open doors for her in other kinds of artistic spaces, such as the InLight Richmond outdoor light art festival, which she hopes will lead to more opportunities for collaboration with artists from disciplines other than her own.

Additional Information

Intersection*ology is a performance by Hepner & Ross that integrates wearable LED imaging devices, real-time light painting projections, live singing, and audience participation. The real-time light-painting is a key component of the piece and can be projected in multiple places (ex: both inside and outside of the performance space, if indoors) and should be quite large in relationship to the performers wearing the LEDs.
