These three large sculptures made of stainless steel & LED lighting offer a celebratory landmark and welcoming neighborhood symbol. Taking the form of an abstract Beaverton Police Department logo/ badge, the artworks explore the motto of BPD: Courage, Compassion and Integrity. The illumination brings a nighttime presence to the artworks symbolizing the ever-present presence of the BPD. I engaged the local community during several Beaverton Night Markets to collect the text used on the surface of the sculpture. This process makes the piece more relevant and personal to the community, resulting in more acceptance and appreciation of both the artwork and what it represents.
The goal of the project was to abstractly represent the motto of the BPD: Courage, Compassion, and Integrity. This was the main focus during each step of the artistic process including planning, designing, community outreach, and fabrication.
I am most proud to work with the community to bring this project to life. During several Beaverton Night Markets I held space for locals to submit words and phrases related to the BPD motto. These words and phrases were then directly placed on the surface of the sculpture and can be seen in the photos attached.
