Overview
Artist Liz Collins created Inheritance, a stunning, inspired textile artwork installation of seven billowing sail-like structures at Little River Café at River Park, a Tom Colicchio restaurant in the Alexandria Life Sciences Complex at 430 East 29th Street, New York, NY, overlooking the East River. The fabric, in silk and polyester, was originally developed by Liz Collins as part of a design project with a major U.S. luxury textile manufacturer and fabricated in Italy. It was custom cut and sewn for this project to evoke the flow and feel of sails in the wind.
Goals
The goal of the commission was to refresh, soften and humanize the space, adding warmth to this high-ceilinged glass cube with site-specific artwork that resonated with the environment.
Process
Alexandria Real Estate Equities contacted Liz Collins to solicit a proposal for the commission in fall 2016. kinder MODERN represents Liz Collins for her large installation work and served as the project coordinator for the commission, acting as a liaison between the artist, the client, the site architect and the commission materials vendors, as well as providing design, production and installation management. Liz Collins developed the design concept to meet the client's goals and specifications in early 2017, coordinating the design to work within the limitations of the site. Production commenced on a rush schedule in early spring 2017, with installation over three days in May 2017.
Additional Information
The commission was inspired by the memory of the artist’s father, a Navy captain and lifelong sailor who shared his love of the water with his daughter.
