Overview
Commissioned for the new athletics dining hall on the Texas Tech Lubbock campus, In Motion was inspired by the University’s mascot, the Masked Rider. Using glass in the clerestory windows of the building, I layered colors to achieve a sense of dimension and movement. Working in this new material expanded my explorations in color mixing and motion from earlier experiments with acrylic.
Goals
In Motion captures the spirit, beauty, and grace of running horses. The subject of horses also alludes to early experiments in animation, such as Eadweard Muybridge’s studies in motion. In Motion’s horizontal lines convey a sense of movement and transformation as the individual bars come together to form a complete image. This connection of the individual completing the whole references the core of collectivism in athletics: each player contributes to the success of the whole team. Integral to the history of the university as well as the history of film and animation, the horses embody the strength, dignity, and speed of the Texas Tech athletes.
