Overview
Artist Russell Anderson was commissioned to develop a sculptural artwork in Village Park adjacent to the new Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital. The work is 6 m tall, approx 9 tonne and built with thousands of layers of laser cut weathering steel welded together.
Goals
The artwork brief was to create a work that inspires and uplifts you. As part of the hospital precinct, the park is a respite location for visitors and local residents. The work is in a prominent location visible at the junction of major road arterials so the work needed to be visually readable from a distance and up close, providing a variety of experiences for the viewer. Since its installation, the artwork has become widely shared on social media and is fast becoming one of Sunshine Coasts new visual icons.
Process
The artwork is a result of the collaboration with Sunshine Coast Council and developers, Stockland. The project was funded by Stockland and the process and management of the project was facilitated through Sunshine Coast Council's Public Art Curator. A National Call out culminated in 25 submissions to review and shortlist. The winning submission was awarded to local Sunshine Coast Artist, Russell Anderson.
