Overview

Humber College is a leading postsecondary institution that is made up of three campuses, serving over 29,000 full-time students. At their North campus in Etobicoke the College was looking to recognize donors in a sophisticated and engaging way. Entro developed and implemented a recognition program that showcases the important support of donors, and expresses the College’s appreciation for this support. Taking inspiration from the Humber River and the green spaces that are part of Humber’s campuses, the wall is comprised of a series of individual hexagon tiles with the four donor levels identified through the use of varying materials.

Process

Working with WSI and Lusens, one of the challenges was in ensuring that the wall was fabricated and installed correctly. As Entro coordinates this, we had to ensure that the hexagon tiles were not only individually precise, but also placed precisely so that they could all fit perfectly. As there were 1935 individual tiles, this required extreme attention to detail, as one mistake would cause a ripple effect and ruin the entire wall.

Additionally, we wanted to use a random pattern but still indicate the different levels of giving. We achieved this by using the different colours (gold, silver etc), but also assigning a certain thickness to different donor levels. We used a unique formula to ensure that the pattern of colours and thicknesses was random over the whole wall, but still provided a visually pleasing and dynamic display.

Additional Information

The design concept is meant to convey the positive influence and impact that donors can have on students in the same way that stones shape the current of the river – each donor’s contribution adding to the mosaic of interactions between the community, College, and students. A series of seamlessly integrated touch screens introduces an interactive component that provides more in-depth information about individual donors, funds raised, and project initiatives. The style and format of the program allows for expansion, while recognizing donor support in a unique and dignified manner.
