Overview

This site-specific bracelet holds 16 suspended charms representing non-profit’s service areas, in 2nd floor atrium between skylight and oculus. Aluminum, polycarbonate, bronze with stainless steel and aircraft cable. 20′ x 20′ x 3′ d. $21,000 commission with in-kind support. Assistance League of Southern California, Hollywood, CA.

Goals

The public art was to create visual interest in the deep open space between the staffed service counters and public seating, without blocking views or passage. A bonus was to reflect the work of the non-profit. The art was integrated into the perimeter of the skylight and above an oculus, a well lit space viewed from diverse levels.

Process

I worked directly with the facility leadership and staff to understand their missions, goals for the public art and process for contributing to the concept. I worked with local fabricators to realize the complex form in a location with site lines from below the skylight and on the service floor.

Additional Information

The project charms are installed with double carabiners, allowing charm movement with the HVAC system.
