Grotto for Mona features a meditative, sparkling cavern inside a stone tunnel. There, blown-glass flowers and polished aluminum reflect small low-resolution videos of catastrophic weather and geological events. In an environment where time becomes immaterial, a 36-channel lighting composition traces patterns and movement to stimulate neural pathways. The resultant experience allows the viewer a unique, individual journey within the context of a shared spectacular experience.
Permanently installed in Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania. Commissioned by collector and Mona founder David Walsh as a highlight in the museum's expanded galleries. The Grotto mirrors cave-like structure of this unique subterranean venue.
