Overview
Great Waves of Immigration is a project commissioned by the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority for the subway station at 181 st in Washington Heights. This work consists of three glass mosaic murals depicting an overfilled Yola, a woman with a certificate of citizenship, and an Unidentified woman with superimposed images of the neighborhood’s architecture. This project highlights the idea of diaspora. It demonstrates how bodies of water can act as barriers and connections, weaving complex webs of human relationships. The movement of people across borders highlights the idea of diaspora. It demonstrates how bodies of water can act as barriers and connections, weaving complex webs of human relationships. The theme of separation and connection is central to my work. I am interested in exploring the physical distances between people and how they are linked through familial and ancestral ties. The diasporic experience, which involves a constant back-and-forth between leaving and arriving, speaks to the enduring strength of bonds that persist despite geographical obstacles.
