Overview

Tapestry commission for the Spellman Library at Grays Harbor College in Aberdeen, Washington. The tapestry is 4.5 by 13 feet, based on the history of the college and incorporates the surrounding landscape. The trees grown up from the nurse log is a metaphor for the college, the second oldest college in Washington..

Goals

The tapestry is visually integrated into the design of the new library, tying the outside environment into the color scheme and materials inside.

Process

Having been selected by the Washington State Arts Commission to create a tapestry for the college, I got involved in the early construction stages of the new library. During construction I toured the site and selected a wall for the location of the tapestry. I also worked with a committee which related stories about the origins of the college and provided me with photos. I created preliminary sketches for the project and presented them to the committee. I then developed a final watercolor design which incorporated their feedback. The committee approved the design and I started weaving. After nearly a year in the loom the tapestry was completed and I oversaw its installation in the new library.

Additional Information

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was my chance to interact with residents of the area and to learn about the history of the college and region..
