Graced With Light – The Ribbon Project, is a music-inspired installation that incorporated Grace Cathedral’s vaulted ceiling arches and nearly 20 miles of ribbon.
In celebration of 100 Years of Music at Grace Cathedral, I was Grace Cathedral’s 2013 Artist in Residence. Ms. Patterson’s work engages audiences through a synthesis of art and music, light and sound, space and self. Seeing the Voice was a yearlong exploration of this compelling synthesis of the spirit with our five traditional senses. I envisioned a series of light pathways, connecting heaven and earth, manifest as ribbons. The ribbons carry our prayers, dreams and wishes skyward, and, in turn, grace streams down the ribbons to us.
The installation was hand-assembled by Ms. Patterson and the Grace Cathedral community. The blue ribbons were installed in March 2013. In May and June, hundreds of community members wrote their prayers, hopes, and wishes on the red ribbons, which were installed in June. White string panels were added in October, upon which video created by filmmaker Adam Larsen was projected. The video and panels were removed in mid-January, 2014.
Graced with Light: The Ribbon Project was extended four times due to its immense popularity, finally coming down on February 2015.
