Overview
FREED is the keystone visual element of a full scale redesign and renovation of John Robinson, Jr. Town Square in Green Valley (formerly known as Nauck), a neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. Landscape Architecture firm Hood Design Studio, led by Walter J. Hood, sought to symbolize the concept of freedom in multiple ways while honoring the community’s rich and varied history.
Goals
FREED embodies multiple intersecting histories of the Green Valley community through the incorporation of a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol alongside current and former names of the historic subdivision.
Process
Hood Design Studio led the comprehensive renovation of John Robinson, Jr. Town Square, including the design of FREED. Ignition Arts aided in design development of FREED, and fabricated and installed the final sculpture.
