Overview
The Soho Myriad commissioned this artwork for the new Four Seasons Hotel in Minneapolis. The artwork is made from resin, glass, metal mesh, vintage Minneapolis area matchbooks, matches and metallic embroidery thread on pearl Ultraleather and brass, mounted on linen.
The piece measures 5′ x 5′ x 5″ and is mounted in a plexiglass frame.
Goals
The Four Seasons Hotel wanted an artwork with a connection to Minnesota so I chose to work with vintage matchbooks from the Minneapolis area. I incorporated these with a variety of materials that I regularly use in my work including hand sculpted resin, metal mesh and glass pieces.
Process
The Soho Myriad had seen my previous work in Gavin Kaysen's restaurant, Demi, and wanted something similar in color scheme and form. I kept a similar design of concentric circles but worked with completely different materials. I added subtle hues of green to compliment the blue and cream of the former pieces color pallet. Metal fabricator, Atom Pechman, at FORMFROMFORM created a custom brass band that finishes the edge of the artwork.
Additional Information
I often use metallic embroidery thread to create geometric patterns and sections within organic sculptural shapes. I like the tension it creates between them.
