Overview
Eight oil paintings were commissioned for several sites in this new replacement hospital complex. They range in size from 24″ x 40″ to 50″ x 36″ and were placed in the Administration Building, East Clinic, Hospital, and West Clinic. All portray the landscape of West Texas, from the Franklin Mountains near El Paso to the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park. This $1.4 billion project is slated to open in spring of 2021. (Photos of the paintings hanging on location will be posted in the future.)
Goals
The idea was to keep the palette sunny and focused on the local land forms and vegetation.
Process
The client chose my existing artwork, batiks and oils, as references for the images. I used photos from my travels in Texas as sources to translate my usual New Mexican landscapes into images appropriate to the Texas project. The media is oil on linen on stretcher bars.
