Overview
Completed as part of the Sea Walls Boston mural festival, Fear depicts several species of urban sharks that can be found in Boston Harbor. The numbers are there to start a discussion about who should be afraid of whom. The fact is, 7 people die from shark interactions worldwide on a yearly basis and around 10,000,000 sharks die as a result of coming into contact with humans.
Goals
The whole festival was commissioned artwork for the City of Boston, in particular the neighborhood of East Boston. They chose this neighborhood due to the fact that it will be more affected by sea level rise than other parts of the city. The goal of the festival was to bring awareness to this fact, as well as other ideas around the impacts of climate change.
Process
Pangeaseed and Harbor Arts developed the festival and invited me to participate. I was given the theme of 'shark conservation' to work with by the organizations. They put me in touch with scientists from the New England Aquarium and I developed my design after speaking with experts on the topic.
