We Talk Chalk
The restaurant owner originally wanted a chalkboard art solution featuring five Mexican actors of his choice. Because the chalkboard art was done in the studio of We Talk Chalk, I encouraged the owner to instead paint the artwork directly onto the surface to avoid smudging (of chalk) when later installed into the restaurant, in which he agreed.
The restaurant owner had a clear objective concerning both the subject matter and background information. The artwork highlights the history of talented Mexican actors during the 50's and their influence both in Mexico and the United States cinema. Practically, the artwork serves as a creative backdrop for taking photographs as patrons enter the bar area of the restaurant.
The restaurant owner approached WeTalk Chalk studio requesting a chalkboard art solution. Lead artist and creative director, Melanie Stimmell Van Latum, knowing I had experience with similar projects, recommended I do this project on behalf of the studio. The owner gave me photo references of the selected actors and exact details on what was needed to be included in the background imagery and I compose the foreground and background information to his liking. We Talk Chalk office manager, Remco Van Latum, also helped with logistics and technical support.
Anticipating the release of the 2015, Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, I composed the five Mexican actors subconsciously as if they were "superheroes". The accented red throughout the black and white painting can also provide a narrative of the viewer's choosing.
