Overview

This southeast Wisconsin hospital expanded their facility and commissioned new art for their lobby. I worked with art consultant CR Davidson Art from Milwaukee, on the proposal for the commission. The client was seeking colorful, abstract, multi-paneled art glass for their waiting area near the hospital cafe. Dimensionally fused glass, with iridescent elements was chosen as the media to fit the area. Catherine Davidson visited my studio, arranged a site visit for the two of us to the hospital building site, where we met with the architect’s project manager and the construction foreman. Catherine provided expert communication between the client, architect and construction crew on the budget, design, lighting and installation. Early on in the conceptualization phase, the CFO from ProHealth Care visited my Wisconsin studio, a rare and delightful visit. She discussed visions for the space, details of the design, and selected glass while viewed art in the gallery over coffee. The project was installed in early 2020 with the help of my team at Anderson Custom. The glass affixes to the wall using stainless steel standoffs provided by Hang Your Glass, Inc.

Goals

It was important that the design and color, work well with an existing painting acquired by the hospital. To meet that goal, I arrived at hand-cutting hundreds of pieces of glass to give it a 'faceted' effect, to compliment the oil painting. The overall glass panels were also designed to have vertical waves, which I created by slumping over kiln paper, using a low temperature firing. Additional goals included delivery and installation of the art by opening date, which was met on time and on budget.

Process

Working with Prohealth Care and CR Davidson Art Consultants was a dream team. We all met throughout the process and collaborated on the design, budget, and creation. Each of us brought our skills into this hospital project and I enjoyed the process greatly.
