Overview
“Rustle and Cry”, by Hana S. Kim, is a site-specific video art installation commissioned by Occidental College Oxy Arts program and projected onto the facades of the College's main courtyard buildings nightly from May 1-18, 2019. The installation was conceived in collaboration with the College's Book Arts class: The Hand Printed Book and presented in conjunction with a limited edition collaborative art book.
Goals
The goals of the project were to integrate the playful exploration of the poetry and imagery from the collaboratively designed and hand printed book produced in the Book Arts class, and reflect them on a larger scale in an engaging public artwork that responds to observations of the dynamics between human and urban wildlife on campus. The poem consolidates the collective experience and observation from the bookmaking class, and the installation finds forms where each collaborating student/artists’ contemplations weave in and out, morphing from one form to another.
Process
The project was commissioned by Occidental College's Oxy Arts program to emerging Los Angeles based artist and designer Hana S. Kim (hanakimnow.com). Kim is a Los Angeles based set and projection designer for live performances, a 2018 Richard E.Sherwood Awardee from Center Theater Group, recipient of Princess Grace Award in Theater Design and a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829. Her designs have won Helen Hayes Award, Stage Raw Awards, StageSceneLA Awards and Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Awards.
The commission asked Kim to engage with the College's course in Book Making to allow an organic emergence of forms, concepts and words from the students source material to be weaved into a visual projection mapping artwork to be exhibited on the facades of the main campus quadrangle, designed by Architect Myron Hunt in the early 20th century Beaux Arts style. This juxtaposition of form and function, aesthetics and technology, historical architecture and emerging media, created a beautiful immersive visual space in the academic center. Allowing for thoughtful exchange of ideas and interpretations.

"Rustle and Cry" is the Spring 2019 iteration of The Ettinger Projected Poetry and Art Project, a public art project that infuses the written word and images into everyday moments around the campus of Occidental College. Presented nightly for several hours each semester, the rotating exhibitions project provocative and intellectual work, inspiring deep collaborations between the arts and digital sciences and building pathways and partnerships that mirror our increasingly pluralistic world.
