Enchanted is focused on the conscious co-existence of man & nature; creating a modern day Utopia. The installation is an interactive fairy tale experience. Currently, we exist in a nature dismissive society, where extinction & climate change are escalating. Enchanted focuses on the beauty & lessons we learn from our natural landscapes & inhabitants. This installation offers a moment of sanctuary from the fast paced indoor lives we live. By constructing a faux natural environment, the artists are conveying the need to “slow down & smell the flowers” before it [nature] disappears. Enchanted throws its audience a life preserver.
To create an interactive immersive sensory experience that offers the viewer a moment of sanctuary from the fast paced indoor lives we are living. By constructing a faux natural environment, the artists are conveying the need to “slow down & smell the flowers” before nature disappears. It was very important to the artists that this installation convey their collaborative vision from the initial concept to the actual completion of the installation
Initially the artists brought their collaborative vision for "Enchanted" to Melanie Johanson, the Curator, Cornell Art Museum. Melanie thought the installation was perfect for their Flora Exhibition, March 29th thru Sept. 9th, 2018. The artists, together with the curator, collaborated on the specifics for the installation at the museum. The Enchanted collaboration between the two artists developed organically. Both artists' work contemplate the connection humans have with nature & the environment. Maeder was working on her series The Voyage, large scale photographs & video installation, viewed from the human perspective; conveying the connectedness of humans with all life forms. Arrieta was working on Keepers of The Kingdom, multimedia animal sculptures, observed from the animal's point of view conveying the need for humans to alter their behavior and open their eyes. If humans do not listen, all life forms on this planet can disappear. It was a natural progression for the artists to collaborate on "Enchanted."
Creating the Enchanted Installation has been a life changing experience for both artists involved in this project. Subsequently, the Enchanted Installation mirrors the transformation of the collaboration, which gives the installation its magic.
