Overview
To paint eight columns under the Skyway in downtown Jacksonville. Each column is 12’ht, 14’-17’circumference, acrylic polymer
Goals
To invigorate, to bring color and impact to downtown Jacksonville. To attract visitors to a lifeless urban core. To educate viewers on cultural, social, historical and natural aspects of the northeast Florida region.
Process
The Cultural Council of Jacksonville/DIA selected six artists to create and install art in various mediums around downtown Jacksonville. We were involved in two public forums to discuss and get information, along with questionnaires and community outreach. Additionally I researched the area to create art that spoke to the specific needs of the commissioning agency and to entertain, educate and enliven peoples lives.
Additional Information
Personally working on Bay Street downtown for 2 months transformed my life: immersed in the community and surrounded by rush hour commuters and the endless parade of homeless I discovered how public art creates a sanctuary and engages and excites everyone.
