Overview
Two clusters of ‘totem timbers’ incised with regional endangered flora and fauna inhabit main entry and urban park for a live-work development in downtown Burnaby, BC. Corresponding website at www.earthgrove.net provides a key to deciphering imagery and background on environmental issues. Weathering steel, lighting. Elements range from 2’ x 12’ to 2’ x 20’. Commissioned by Appia Developments for Solo District. Sharp & Diamond LA.Goals
The artwork was developed as a mirrored two-part environmental statement within the context of a mixed-use live/work development. One cluster of totemic elements inhabit the more urban entry to the main residential building while a corresponding grove resides in the complex’s central park. As a conceptual counterpoint we took material cues from the built environment, integrating the artwork with a singular rustic palette and play of light and pattern.
Process
We worked with the architect and landscape architect to integrate the artwork within the larger design scheme. We addressed issues of accessibility (both physically and conceptually), safety and visibility. Employing strategies involving multiplicity, vertical scale, inexpensive but durable materials and contextual lighting we were able to achieve significant impact throughout an expansive site with a limited budget.
