CHATTANOOGA PUBLIC ART PROGRAM
Overview
Whimsical sculptures invite public interaction, offering seating and inviting playful engagement. Community input informed design of the sculptures.
Goals
The goal was to create functional sculptures that were evocative of the rich past and present cultural legacy of East Lake Park via art that infused the site with color and created seating, reflecting the vibrant cultural diversity and close-knit nature of the East Lake community. The fantastical scale shift surprises and delights the public, transforming an ordinary day at the park into an exciting adventure.
Process
WOWHAUS led a series of community engagement initiatives in the park and at the neighboring public school, seeking input from diverse community members of all ages and backgrounds. Working together to assess a wide array of sites within the park, we honed in on a central site that wpi;d be transformed into a colorful ommunity hub. These highly durable sculptures are striking seem at a distance, evoking a flock of swans departing the central lake in the park. The artwork greeted with great enthusiasm and are beloved icons within this culturally diverse community; the vibrant color palette as selected with input from people who use the park each day.
