Overview
This window installation at Mixed Greens Gallery in New York used the building’s architecture as its starting point, incorporating mullions, sills, and fire escape into its geometry.
2008
LEDs, fluorescents, gel filters, and aluminum frame.
3 windows: 111″ x 80″, 80″ x 31″, and 80″ x 53″
Goals
The intent was to use the windows to activate the street, which was successful. It also worked with its surrounding architectural features to integrate it into the building itself.
Process
2,642 LEDs joined with the hard edges and soft blends of gel filters to change the experience of the urban street. The windows had been covered with diffused fabric. The filters were mounted on aluminum frames built to fit each window, and their distances from the diffused fabric determined whether the colored gels joined with hard-edges or blended with them.
