Overview
Light Installation with 410 suspended light panels with acrylic and programmed RGB LED-lights. 50' W x 54' H x 24' ft D [15.2m x 16.5m x 7.3m].
Public Agency: New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Percent for Art Program.
Building architect: Perkins Will.
Goals
By placing the 410 light panels in five layers aligned with the façade’s diamond grid, a stunning scenario unfolds throughout the atrium’s gigantic volume. Individual light panels slowly change color in synchronicity, rendering space as a palpable experience.
During the day, the light of the panels interacts with the sunlight streaming into the atrium through the south façade. Subtle changes of the ambient light level caused by clouds or the slow, dramatic changes during dusk and dawn are reflected by the abstract animations displayed in the light panel array.
Process
The commission was awarded after a competition by invitation. Design and engineering was done by the artist. On-site installation was executed by the artist's technicians.
