Vandalia Bronze

Overview

A larger than life sculpture of inspirational triathlete, Dave Alexander. He is an exceptional competitor who has competed in over 300 international ultra triathlons. One beauty of this piece was the balance of Dave's ironman build on a small framed bike. A favorite aspect of this piece is the strength and intensity of Alexander's posture. An interesting aspect of the sculpture is the hidden text along the edge of the wheel. Dimensions are 6' X 8' X 2', cast bronze.

Goals

An important aspect of this piece was to capture the power behind the athlete. Lester wanted to make sure that Alexander's fire was accurately portrayed despite the solidity of bronze. One challenge of the project was to bring intensity through a graceful execution. Dave's face exhibits calmness, confidence, and perseverance. His body posture depicts speed, force, and competition.

Process

This piece was uniquely designed with ZBrush. Though Guffey and Jeff were not assisting in the 3D-sculpting of the project, they assisted in the creative idea process for this sculpture. The Vandalia team collaborated in the final installation of Dave Alexander at The Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.
