Overview
Created for the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, “Dancing on the Stairs” features four bronze figures dancing on stone steps. Each figure represents differing styles of dance and movement, ballet, modern and hip hop.
Goals
The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities provides the surrounding community with cultural experiences in the performing arts, visual arts and music. My goal in creating this piece, was to represent the various artistic disciplines through figurative movement. I felt it was important to incorporate the overall dynamic feeling of expression that occurs at the Arvada Center.
Process
When the Arvada Center was redesigning the Black Box Theater courtyard, they asked artists to submit designs for the courtyard sculpture. The art selection committee narrowed the choices to three designs and the public voted on which design they would like to see permanently installed. I was very honored to have the citizens of Arvada choose my design, "Dancing on the Stairs". I worked closely with the director, curator and building facility manager to insure the sculpture was harmonious with the surrounding architecture as well as safe and durable in the courtyard location.
