A 900 lb, 8 foot diameter, split-hemisphere rotation, hand-hammered, ripple-mirrored stainless steel, light-projecting disco ball for AEG’s Mission Ballroom in Denver, one of the country’s newest high-end music venues. It’s name, Crescendo, was inspired by the loudest point reached in a gradually increasing sound; it’s the visual centerpiece of the venue. My favorite thing about Crescendo is that covers everyone in the same light; it channels revelry and creates memories. It also does things that no other disco ball has ever done before. Some notable musicians that have played under Crescendo include: Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Weezer, and Brandi Carlile. Working with the world’s second largest presenter of live music as a client was an amazing experience.
The primary goal was creating an object of beauty that could switch between being highly prominent and discrete within a cavernous space. The client wanted Crescendo to cast rippled reflections on the walls rather than pinpoint reflections that result from a standard disco ball.
