Overview

I worked collaboratively with the community in Indianapolis to construct this stainless steel and acrylic sculpture. It is composed of over 4,000 blue plastic tiles, which are covered with writing and drawing from the community. I traveled across the country asking people to respond to the prompt: “Tell me something you have discovered.”

The overall dimensions are 15′ x 9′ x 6′

Goals

The artwork was designed specifically to be a community engaging artwork. The community had a variety of ways in which to interact with the process of the artmaking. The sculpture was brought to Indianapolis in a skeletal form (a mesh substructure). Nybeck invited the community to help her attach the tiles onto the substructure. The other method of engagement was writing a personal discovery onto a tile. Nybeck had over 4,000 participants, ranging in age from 3 to 103.

After the installation, which was a week long process, people spend time reading and reading the responses on the surface. It is a place created for reflection and connection.
