Overview

25′ tall, 8,000lbs of glass and forged bronze created with the participation of hundreds of church members to commemorate the church’s centennial anniversary at this location. The participants thumbprints are cast into the 1″ thick fused, multi colored glass crosses. I designed the memorial gardens as a setting for the sculpture to accommodate outdoor celebration and included an ossuary for communal burial of cremains.

Goals

Created to represent a large, multi faceted, diverse membership, this sculpture and gardens commemorate this community's centennial anniversary at this location. I created multiple works inside their sanctuary in 2009 with as many as 750 participants in physically creating the central sculpture for the interior space. This sculpture is an exterior extension of that artistic plan.

Process

I worked with a studio team of 5 assistants, landscape architects, engineers, contractors, and countless members of the church community while creating this project. To directly involve and represent the church membership, I cast their individual thumbprints into the glass surfaces. There were several hundred participants who placed their indelible thumbprints permanently into the surfaces.

Additional Information

The sculptures and artworks created for the interior of this church are shown in an additional project gallery here. https://www.codaworx.com/?post_type=wp_codaworx_projects&p=191618
