Overview
Our design was created to be painted on the intersection of Central Avenue and 5th Street, in downtown St Petersburg Florida. It celebrates tradition and innovation by
combining colors and shapes inspired by the traditional quilting patterns as well as the bright color palette found in contemporary abstraction.
It symbolizes the diverse backgrounds and creativity of artists and artisans who found inspiration and meaning in St Petersburg FL.
Goals
One of the goals was to capture the identity of the area, its cultural life, architectural sophistication and diversity in an abstract manner. Our most important goal when creating this intersection was to slow vehicular traffic along high pedestrian traffic corridors while giving the community a sense of place.
Process
We designed and painted the intersection. The painting process involved the participation of neighbors and volunteers. It was completed in 7 hours.
