Overview
Artist in Resident at the Grand Canyon National Park
Goals
I needed to propose an interesting art exhibit to be chosen as the artist in resident for the North Rim. I googled earth the area for where I wanted to create large scale textile installations and designed them at home before I arrived.
Process
I proposed to hike to the canyon floor and back up and photograph the geology and mix dye recipes to match and then create the outdoor textile installations. While hiking by myself from rim to floor and back up, I met a Preventative Search and Rescue volunteer who was not working but hiking rim to rim too. She helped me figure out food/water ratios while hiking over 3 days and pointed out different geology and flora photo ops.
The Department of the Interior was my sponsor while I was there for 3 weeks.
Additional Information
This residency took a year and a half to plan, schedule, obtain hiking/camping permits inner canyon, shipped art supplies, shipped 100 yards of silk, groceries, and trained to hike the 24 miles in 3 days successfully.
