Overview
This is a work developed by Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee, which became an Iconic work in Houston. Utilizing the design of the painting, “Houston: Beneath Waves, Reaching Greater Heights,” a mural originally painted in the Houston First Building downtown. The image was then translated into a large-scale Billboard which was displayed off of HIGHWAY/ROAD on 610 by the Galleria for 14 months. Originally the painting was a mural in the Houston Fist Building, and was eventually awarded Houston First, Sky Art Project Winner.
Goals
This work was meant to embody the spirit of Houston and keep passers by uplifted.
Process
The original panting, "Houston: Beneath Waves, Reaching Greater Heights,” was used to created a mural in the Houston First Building. Working with fabricators, Mahimtura Folmsbee, created the digital work which then sublimation printed and finally was installed as a billboard.
Additional Information
Indian born and raised contemporary artist Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee is known around the globe for her artwork dedicated to marine conservation. As an interdisciplinary artist, she works in various media, to create interactive public art installations that are both educational, scientific and up-lifting. She firmly believes art can be used to heal our oceans. Her work is inspired by international diving expeditions focusing on marine conservation. She creates ethereal, intricate transformative worlds that are meant to invite the public into beauty and uplifting installations and spaces and take the viewer into an immersive experience through abstraction and realism.
