Progetto Arte Poli
This is a “piece of modern history”: this is the first Catholic university allowed in Hong-Kong/China to be built, where Master Poli was appointed by Bishop Yeung to create all artistic works for this remarkable place. Works implemented: entrance stained glass window, marble inlay mosaic for the outer wall of the Conference Halls, all artistic works for the Chapel.
The main goal was to install modern style artworks with a deep liturgical meaning, representing the most important historical events of the Church through three main figures: Francis of Assisi, Francis of Sales and Francis Xavier. Three remarkable lives, Three strong evidences that become universal messages: Love through Nature, Love through Teaching, Love through Communication. One theme, common denominator of the teaching of these “three giants of the faith”: the divine Light, the illumination of the spirit over darkness; a theme that became the inspiration, the semantic meaning, the structure of the visual language, the guide and the content for the artistic realization of the works. The lighting also as knowledge, light as a source of life, light as a symbol of the pervasive presence of the divine Spirit in Creation. Therefore the pursuit of “spiritual light” can be defined as the beginning and foundation of a man’s inner need, of each man on this earth, for the raising of his soul, irrespective of race or religion. The light of faith: “I have come into the world as light, so that no one who has faith in me will go on living in the dark”.
There was a strong collaboration between the artist, the liturgist, the Bishop and priests and all the community. The artworks of the institute were designed as a “single, comprehensive project”, where you can observe the generative process, its unraveling from the original point to its deepest forms. The same works thus can simply transmit their contents by becoming “messengers” of universal contents common to all humankind. The art style is inspired by the art movements of impressionism and expressionism with forays into the phase of Mitteleuropean divisionism, which rekindles the need of truth and spirituality in man in opposition to the materialism of the previous century.
There is a very deep meaning behind each artwork. For example: 1)Conference halls mosaic: the central light of God as a way of spreading knowledge throught the world. The marble pieces are paper sheets, there are different passages of the Bible written in English and Chinese. 2) Side Window: Arrival of the missionaries boats to China 3) Main stained glass of the Chapel: from one side the 3 Francis, on the other 3 main figures in Chinese history. 4) Entrance door of university: the Light of God coming down to all of us.
