Overview
I was asked to improve the biophilic nature of the Mills Medical Arts Building a part of the now Sutter Health/Mills Peninsula Health Center in San Mateo. The four story building atrium presented an ideal space for a mobile. As I had created multiple commissions for the Sutter Health, we wanted a unity among the facilities. I proposed my nature photography digitally printed on chiffon to be translated into a mobile.
Goals
The four story building was built in the 60's with a modernist appeal designed with the intention of doctor's offices. As it is part of the immediate complex for to the primary hospital Mills Peninsula Health Center we were interested in design continuity and the art is part of it. We wanted to create an uplifting experience within the space. The decorator selected peaceful tones and fabric for new furniture which greatly aided in modernizing.
Process
Interior design, Sherry Lenci, hospital vice president, Pat Ryan VP, and facilities management staff were directly involved with the selection of the art through to its installation. Sherry showed off her aesthetic astuteness by supporting the concept, then selecting from potential photos and continuing to design all the way through installation.
