Overview

A brushstroke is a shared artistic connection.
Created during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, with travel restrictions in place, Brooklyn-based artist Mia Pearlman created BRUSHSTROKE.

Comprised of a series of undulating bold aluminium forms BRUSHSTROKE is suspended from the atrium of Zhongshan Huafa Plaza. Inspired by the idea of the brushstroke as a shared artistic connection between Western and Chinese cultures. Energising the space with its bright colours and swirling forms, this work is Pearlman’s first permanent installation that uses colour.

Using a paper model created by Pearlman, UAP’s Shanghai team created 3D renders of and models of the work so the artist could manipulate and tweak the positions and forms from her Brooklyn studio. Each component of BRUSHSTROKE was created using laser cut aluminium and finished with a 3D embossed ink jet print.

Goals

To allow the artist to manipulate the renders of the artwork, in order to further transform them.

Process

Back and forth continued communication and artistic illustrations of the desired outcome allowed for open and resourceful communication.
