Overview
Life-sized bronze skull and spine. Approximately 3.5 ft tall including the base. Each of the 35 parts were cast in bronze and finished in a warm ferric nitrate and sulphur patina. All work, from sculpting to wax work, to casting, patination, and fabrication were completed by me. I enjoy seeing projects from inception to completion.
Goals
I am fascinated with articulation in bringing forms to life. I enjoy showing the mechanics of everyday movement to highlight the beauty of natural forms and extend them into the world of fantasy.
Process
The client requested that all parts be able to be disassembled, particularly that he would have easy access to remove the skull and jaw. In addition, the jaw must articulate. As a result, I developed a detent mechanism that would lock in to the jaw and allow full movement. The skull and each of the vertebrae fit along a 1/2" stainless steel rod and mount to a fully rotational base.
