Overview
The clients needed three floors of hand railing for a newly renovated space. The theme was centered around a tree which ran from the lower level throughout the entire house.
Goals
The goal was to create an unusual , sculptural yet functional railing which would flow through the space . The incorporation of the tree was the priority. I then envisioned the intertwining of branches and leaves flowing not in the usual up and down direction, but spanning across the space. The effect kept the feeling of openness and free form. After showing the client the preliminary sketches, we went to work mapping out the project. There were many times I had to reinvent the ideas to fit the space. The result is a breathtaking functional sculpture that is immediately seen upon entering the home.
Process
As I am both artist, designer and fabricator, most of the project was on my own. I did work also with my husband, Walter Kenul, co-owner of BFD Firehouse Studios. He helped with the engineering and installation of the railings.
Additional Information
I only create very specific architectural projects. I consider myself a sculptor, therefore I only design railings, gates etc. with the concept of functional sculpture. Each project is totally unique and highly personalized for the client.
