Overview
Blue Mandalas mosaic installation beautifies a trash receptacle in the Historic North Charlotte neighborhood. I was commissioned by the neighborhood association to create a mosaic to cover the designated concrete trash bin. Trash bin measures 27″ tall x 24″ wide x 24″ deep. It is on a sidewalk in a bustling retail and dining area.
My vision for these blue mandalas was to bring a sense of serenity to the area. The andamento of the mosaic flows around all 4 sides of the receptacle, and the colors, aquas, turquoises, periwinkles and indigos, shade from light to dark in a rich ombré.
Vitreous glass tile, glazed ceramic, and Italian millefiori.
Goals
My vision for these blue mandalas was to bring a sense of serenity to the area. Mandala motifs lend themselves to public art, as their rhythm and geometry tend to capture the eye. The andamento of the mosaic flows around all 4 sides of the receptacle, and the colors, aquas, turquoises, periwinkles and indigos, shade from light to dark in a rich ombré.
Process
I submitted a full-color sketch to the committee. After being selected, I submitted a full-scale, full-color mock-up, as well as a grouted sample board for the committee to see the beauty of the materials for final approval.
