Overview
Corten Bloom, standing 6ft tall, is exhibited in the Bridge Gardens. With over 300 petals growing out from a convex polyhedron, it further defines Mooney’s signature mathematic language within the context of the nature between art, nature and mathematics. Norman believed in material that mathematic rule and tried to depict an exploration into elemental and cyclical synergies of nature.
Inspired by the art of science in nature, Norman created his own rule to generate hundreds of iterations of flower-like forms. “Bloom” is one of the best showcases. The rust layer built up by the corten steel provides a natural characteristic like bark, allowing the sculpture to be integrated into the landscape setting and become part of nature.
Goals
The sculpture is now a public landmark at Bridge Garden, attracting thousands of tourists and regular visits every year. It functions both as a meaningful public artwork and a leisure spot, welcoming audiences at all ages to play around and to walk inside and out.
The work calls upon natural elements and biodynamic forms surround us and sublimates them into larger-than-life public delights. Nature is distilled in the flow of forms. Mooney gives context to our place within the greater universal mass that surrounds us, calling upon our spatial experience with the matter around us.
