Overview
The six arches of this gateway suggest a time-lapse sequence moving toward perfect closure (justice). Each side of the street features three arcs that get closer until they almost meet over the center of Martin Luther King Junior Drive. At the base of the largest arc on each side are handprints with pressure sensors inviting people to lean in and push. As people press, they control the lighting in the arcs, visible from a great distance. We expect people to pose and post photos of themselves doing their part to push the arcs towards justice.
This piece is a color-changing, interactive gateway that gives physical form to the concept of an arc bending towards justice. At the base of the central arc on each side are hand-prints and footprints suggesting that people stand and push. This installation is about Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, but as the hand and footprints suggest, it is about every one of us.
“Bends Towards Justice” is meant to suggest that:
1. A movement towards justice is possible.
2. We each have the opportunity and obligation to push.
3. It is even better if we push together.
It is also designed to complement the Mercedes Benz Stadium and the forward-looking MLK Innovation Corridor across which it
