Overview
330 sq ft curtain wall at Castaic Aquatic Center with 21 tile-like panels of digitally fritted glass. The concept depicts a fun, effervescent scene of underwater bubbles, and is visible from outside and within the complex. The design is intended to change appearance as the day passes into night, interacting with the sunlight and the backlight from inside the facility.
Goals
The frit needed to be a very specific bright-blue pigment, with all 21 panels being exactly the same in color and hew.
Process
The goal of finding the perfect frit was achieved through a number of diligent trials and several generations of samples and mockups. The inks were applied to the panes by hand using a silkscreen and squeegee.
Additional Information
LEED Certified. Each decorative glass panel is placed between and protected by one inch thick insulated glass units. By upholding sustainable fabrication standards, Triview Glass Industries helped the Bubbles pubic art project achieve U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification.
