Overview

All Our Relations is a collaboration between Cree/Metis designer Angela DeMontigny, glass artist Paull Rodrigues, the public art management team of Cobalt Connects and LaFontaine IronWorks. The piece is comprised of 5 towers of hand-made glass beads, each tower is 10′ wide and 40′ tall. The designs depict the narrative of the All Our Relations – Thanksgiving Address of the Haudenosaunee people in more than 7000 hand-made 3″ glass beads. This work is a monumental piece at the base of James Street on the newly revitalized waterfront in the City of Hamilton. Installation was completed in September 2023 for National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Goals

The work is celebrating the renewal of the Hamilton Waterfront and anchors the space in the Indigenous teachings of stewardship of the land.

Process

Cobalt Connects, seeing a lack of Indigenous work in civic collections, reached out to Cree/Metis fashion designer Angela DeMontigny to collaborate on the submission for the City of Hamilton/ Hamilton Waterfront Trust Call for artists. Rooted in sustainable design, the team selected local glass artist Paull Rodrigues to create the 7000+ beads for the work.

Additional Information

Commission issued by City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Waterfront Trust. The project also included an education program with 150 high school students focused on learning about Indigenous artistic practices, and 70+ local volunteer who helped insert the beads in the steel frames over a month-long process.
