Overview
As design team artist I developed several artworks for the park including the Swim and Dive Panel installation. Stop action copper and brass cutout figures depicting swim strokes and dive techniques are mounted on stainless steel panels. The panels are recessed into freestanding stucco walls that are sited at the entrance to the park’s Aquatics Center. The park received the 2014 Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association, San Diego Imperial Counties Chapters.
Goals
The City was committed to integrating public art into the park master plan. I collaborated with the design team to identify opportunities and developed site-specific concepts for many area's throughout the park. Upon approval of the preferred designs, I coordinated the public art components with the various contractors associated with the implementation of a project, fabricated the artworks and supervised their installation.
Process
I was an equal member of the design team made up of Landscape Architects, Architects and an Aquatics Consultant and was encouraged to provide input on every aspect of the park master plan. As a team, we worked with City staffers to facilitate community meetings and workshops, met to develop our ideas and presented our concepts to project stakeholders. We coordinated our construction schedules and met regularly with the general contractor during park construction.
Additional Information
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a professional and engaging design team.
