The very different materials of wood and metal materialize the tension and connection between the physical and the spiritual and the wholeness and complexity of what constitutes a life.
Hospitals traditionally treat the physical body. More and more we are recognizing that the outer body is the manifestation of the inner spirit. The fluid movements of water and air that are embedded in this piece reference their ability to move and flow around obstacles and to transform into new configurations; they are a metaphor for the coming together of the supportive and shared community of the hospital.
For this light-filled atrium that functions as the introduction and connector to various parts of this hospital complex, I wanted to create an elegant form of movement and grace, embodied in a calming flow.
